Circuit Breakers

Without circuit breakers, household electricity would be very dangerous because of the potential for fires or explosions.

The circuit breaker is an important safety mechanism. Circuit breakers prevent damage and fire by automatically halting current when a problem occurs. For example, whenever electrical wiring in a building has more current flowing through it than the rated mount, a circuit breakder cuts the power until somebody can fix the problem.

A circuit breaker is a circuit protection device that, like a fuse, will stop current in the circuit if there is a direct short, excessive current, or excessive heat. Unlike a fuse, a circuit breaker is reusable. The circuit breaker does not have to be replaced after it has opened or broken the circuit like a fuse does. Instead of replacing the circuit breaker, you reset it.
